The Resistor SMD code calculator is a compact reference tool for decoding the printed codes on surface-mount resistors. It handles four code formats: the standard 3-digit and 4-digit systems, the EIA-96 1% scheme, and the 2/5/10% letter-number codes. Instead of flipping through datasheets, you'll get the resistance value in seconds.
Three-digit codes use the first two digits as significant figures and the last digit as the multiplier. An "R" in the code marks a decimal point, so 4R7 equals 4.7 ohms. For current-sensing resistors, an "M" works the same way but signals milliohms, and an underline under a digit also means that the value is in milliohms. That's a subtle distinction that's easy to misread on a tiny component.
In my testing, the four-digit format proved easy to learn. The same positional rules apply, which makes it more forgiving than the letter-number systems for beginners.
EIA-96 codes pair a number from 01 to 96 with a letter, and each combination maps to a specific resistance value within a 1% tolerance band. The 2%, 5%, and 10% codes flip the format: a letter comes first, followed by a number from 01 to 60. Memorizing these tables isn't realistic for most people, which is why a decoder tool saves real time during board repair or component sorting.
You'll want to compare the printed code against the actual component under bright light. I found the underline notation easy to miss on dark-colored resistors. A quick visual check prevents costly misreads.
The app doesn't handle chip capacitors or inductor codes at all. It's strictly for resistors. If you're sorting a mixed component bin, you'll still need a multimeter or a second reference tool for non-resistor parts. The version we tested, v1.4, runs on Android 5.1 and later, and it's a lightweight download under 10 MB.
For most hobby work, the Resistor SMD code calculator covers what you'll run into. But when the printing on a resistor has faded or the code is non-standard, a multimeter measurement is the only reliable fallback.
Can the Resistor SMD code calculator work offline?
Yes, it's a fully offline tool. No internet connection is needed for the code tables.
What's the difference between EIA-96 and the 2/5/10% code?
EIA-96 uses a number then a letter for 1% tolerance parts. The 2/5/10% system uses a letter then a number, and the multiplier is derived from the letter position.
How can you determine the tolerance from the SMD code format?
The code format tells you the tolerance class. EIA-96 always means 1%, while the letter-number system maps to 2%, 5%, or 10% depending on the letter prefix.
