SketchPad - Doodle On The Go

SketchPad - Doodle On The Go is a free drawing app that turns your Android into a canvas without the usual bloat. It weighs only 5 MB, so you can install it and start scribbling before you overthink it. That's the whole point.

A Drawing App Without the Setup

Many drawing apps push tutorials, sign-in prompts, and permission requests your way before you can draw. SketchPad skips that. You open it, pick a brush width, choose a color from the palette, spectrum, or RGB sliders, and you're drawing. I noticed the lack of onboarding makes a real difference when you're waiting for an appointment or commuting.

Controls That Feel Natural

You can see exactly how thick or thin a stroke will land before you commit to a mark, which removes the guesswork from bold outlines and fine details. Undo and redo are unlimited, so mistakes don't cost you anything but a tap. I also like the shake-to-clear gesture for wiping the whole canvas in one motion, though it's best used when you're not bouncing around in a moving vehicle.

Saving, Sharing, and Honest Limits

SketchPad saves exports as PNG or JPEG and can share images directly, but don't expect sharing to work without a network connection. The storage permission exists only for saving sketches, and you can change the default folder from Settings; on Android 10 and later, each app manages its own app-specific storage, so you'll find exports there instead.

One honest limitation is that shake-to-clear depends on an accelerometer; tablets without one won't have that shortcut. For serious urban sketching, a dedicated drawing app with layer support would be a better fit, but for quick doodles and passing the time, SketchPad is enough. There aren't any ads or in-app purchases, so the canvas stays clean, and it works offline.

If you want a no-nonsense doodle app that loads fast and respects your storage, this little tool deserves a spot on your phone.
