About this app

What YouTube Kids Actually Does (and Doesn’t Do) for Your Child

After months of letting my 6-year-old navigate YouTube Kids alone, I finally understood its real value—it’s not a perfectly safe bubble, but a noticeably cleaner corridor. The app filters out the wild chaos of the main YouTube by algorithmically blocking mature content, flagging inappropriate keywords, and letting parents manually whitelist or blacklist channels. This gives you a curated library of nursery rhymes, DIY science clips, and cartoon shorts without the risk of stumbling into political rants or adult humor. But the catch? The algorithm still slips through borderline videos—think sponsored toy unboxings that feel like ads—so you can’t fully trust the auto-filter alone.

How the Parental Controls Really Work (and Their Limits)

You set a timer, lock the search function, or choose from three content tiers: Preschool (ages 4–5), Younger (6–8), and Older (9–12). I used the “Younger” preset expecting strict curation, but my son still found a video explaining how to build a vinegar rocket—fine for his age, but the comments section was surprisingly absent (a huge plus). The passcode-locked settings let you disable sound effects or block a specific video after the fact. However, the timer is per session, not daily, so my kid learned to close and reopen the app to reset it—a clever workaround I had to outsmart by using the phone’s overall screen time limit instead.

One real pain point: you can’t see what your child watched unless you manually go into the “Watch History” tab inside the parent settings. No push notifications, no weekly summary. So if you’re a busy parent, you’ll need to remember to check periodically or risk missing that they spent half an hour on a single toy review channel.

Interface Design: Designed for Small Fingers, But Small Screens Struggle

The big, cartoonish buttons and limited navigation bars make it easy for preschoolers to swipe left or tap a video without help. My daughter (age 4) could independently pick a Peppa Pig clip within seconds—something impossible on the main YouTube app. But on a phone screen, the thumbnail thumbnails are so tiny that she often taps the wrong video. The app is clearly built for tablets; on a 5.5-inch phone, the text and icons feel cramped. Also, the “live” tab sometimes shows random low-quality streams (someone’s backyard chickens) that aren’t age-appropriate, because the algorithm treats “live” as a separate category with looser filters.

Honest Drawbacks That Most Reviews Skip

First, the content library is shallow for older kids. Once your child passes age 8, they’ll quickly exhaust the “Older” tier’s science experiments and craft tutorials, then beg to switch to the main YouTube—which defeats the app’s purpose. Second, the app is surprisingly heavy on ads even for a “kids” product. Every few videos, a 15–30 second preroll for a toy or cereal plays. While they’re age-appropriate (no political or violent ads), they still train kids to want those products. Third, the “approved content only” mode is tedious to set up: you must manually add each channel or video URL, and there’s no bulk import from your regular YouTube subscriptions. If you have two kids with different preferences, you’re stuck managing one static list.

Who Should (and Shouldn’t) Rely on YouTube Kids

This app is a solid choice if your child is under 8 and you want a quick, low-effort way to hand them a device without constant hovering. It’s also great for car trips or waiting rooms when you need 20 minutes of distraction. But if you’re a parent who wants zero ads, full control over every second of screen time, or a deeper educational library, you’ll be frustrated. Pair it with a separate screen-time app (like Google Family Link) to actually enforce daily limits. For me, it’s a decent compromise—I just wish the filtering were as tight as the marketing suggests.
