About this app

Practical In-Store Integration

Thalia bridges online ordering and physical retail better than most bookstore apps. The Click & Collect feature lets you order a book and pick it up within an hour — provided it's in stock at your chosen store during opening hours. I've used this when I needed a last-minute gift; the app showed me which branches had the title, and I grabbed it on my way home. The Scan & Go checkout is even more convenient: you scan product barcodes in the store, pay through the app, and walk out without queuing. But it's not flawless — I've had the scanner fail on worn-out barcodes, and the feature isn't available in every Thalia location yet.

eBook Reading and the Digital Library

The built-in eBook reader handles the basics: adjust font size, brightness, and switch between day and night modes. Your purchased titles are stored in a personal library within the app, accessible offline once downloaded. However, syncing between devices is inconsistent. If I start a book on my phone and later open the same copy on my tablet, I often have to manually hunt for the last page. Also, the reader only supports books bought from Thalia's own store — you cannot import EPUBs from elsewhere. For serious digital readers, that’s a notable constraint.

The Used Book Marketplace: Saving Money at a Cost

Thalia’s used book section is a genuine money-saver if you’re willing to wait. Selling is straightforward: scan the ISBN, set a price, and mail the book in. I cleared out half my shelf last year and earned enough store credit for two new releases. The catch is that niche or older titles can sit listed for months before someone bites. Condition descriptions from sellers are subjective — I once received a “very good” copy that had underlining on every other page. Still, the sustainability angle is real, and you save up to 60% compared to new prices.

Limitations Worth Considering

Free shipping only applies within Germany and requires either a book/audiobook in the cart or a €30+ total. Outside Germany, the app's usefulness drops sharply. The recommendation system (“Thalia Next”) feels heavy on bestsellers rather than true personalisation — I’ve told it I dislike thrillers, yet they keep popping up. The app is also German-centric; English-language users will find many book descriptions and UI strings untranslated. Audiobooks are available to buy, but the app lacks a dedicated player — you download a file or use a third-party app, which breaks the seamless experience. For a casual reader living in Germany, Thalia is a solid tool. For digital‑only or international users, it’s only half the picture.
