About this app

CapCut is a free mobile video editor that balances automation with manual control. Its core draw is the template library: you drop in clips and get a finished edit with transitions, effects, and music. But beyond that, the timeline and keyframe tools give experienced editors room to fine-tune. The catch? Not everything is as polished as it seems.

Templates That Actually Save Time

Templates are the main reason most people download CapCut, and they do work. You select a style, replace the placeholder videos or photos, and the app stitches everything together with matching transitions and a soundtrack. I found that once you swap in your own footage, the rhythm sometimes feels off—the template was designed for a specific pacing, and your clips might be longer or shorter than expected. You’ll still need to trim or reposition them manually in the timeline. For quick Instagram Reels or TikTok posts, though, it cuts editing time from 20 minutes to two.

The AI Assistants: Helpful but Not Magic

CapCut leans heavily on AI for automatic captions, background removal, and color correction. The caption engine is surprisingly accurate for clear English speech, but it stumbles on accents, background noise, or speech that overlaps, and you’ll spend time correcting errors. The background remover works great for simple scenes—a person standing against a plain wall—but struggles with hair detail or moving objects, leaving a rough edge. I’ve used it for quick thumbnails, but for a clean chroma key effect, it’s safer to use a desktop tool.

Where CapCut Falls Short

Despite its convenience, the app has real limitations. Free exports cap at 1080p, and some premium effects and stickers require a subscription or an active internet connection—offline, the library shrinks noticeably. The built-in music library is decent but heavily reused; many popular tracks appear in countless videos, so your edit may sound generic. On phones with less than 4GB of RAM, rendering a project with multiple layers and effects can cause lag or even crashes. It’s not a replacement for Premiere Rush or LumaFusion, but as a quick-and-dirty mobile editor, it gets the job done.

Getting the Most Out of CapCut

If you’re new to video editing, start with templates to learn the app’s layout. Once comfortable, explore the keyframe tool—place two keyframes on a clip and change scale or position between them for basic animation. The ‘adjust’ panel lets you tweak exposure, contrast, and saturation before applying a filter, which prevents that washed-out look. I’ve been using CapCut for months mostly for repurposing long-form content into short clips; the speed of exporting a 60-second vertical video is hard to beat. Just don’t expect it to handle complex timeline work smoothly.
