LEGO Batman: Beyond Gotham pulls Batman away from Gotham's alleys and into a galaxy built around the Green Lantern mythos. You explore Lantern planets, smash Lego constructs for studs, and switch characters with unique abilities to solve puzzles. The appeal is the relaxed pace and environmental variety — not deep combat but playful exploration that rewards curiosity.

Level Design and Puzzle Logic

The levels are structured like themed dioramas. Each planet feels like a distinct set piece with its own visual identity — a haunted Halloween zone here, a neon-lit Oa skyline there, a swampy marshland around the bend. Puzzles require swapping between characters with specific tools: a grapple gun for high ledges, a cutting torch for sealed doors, or a Lantern construct to power a bridge. There's no real failure state. You lose a few studs if you fall, then respawn instantly.

What surprised me after a few hours is how much the game expects you to replay levels. Blocked paths and unreachable items require abilities from characters you haven't unlocked yet. Coming back later with the right hero feels satisfying, but the first playthrough can feel slightly gated.

Character Variety and Control Quirks

The roster is enormous — over 100 characters including deep cuts like Guy Gardner and Kilowog. Each has one or two unique moves, but most share the same core actions: jump, attack, grapple, and interact. The novelty wears off once you realize many characters are functionally identical outside of their specific puzzle key. Still, seeing Martian Manhunter phase through a wall or Plastic Man stretch across a gap never gets old.

Controls are straightforward but occasionally imprecise during platforming segments. The camera can swing awkwardly in tight corridors, and aiming grapple points sometimes requires pixel-perfect positioning. It's not game-breaking, but you'll notice it in the later stages.

Performance, Co-op, and Honest Limitations

On mobile hardware, LEGO Batman: Beyond Gotham runs at a stable framerate most of the time. Busy scenes with multiple explosions caused noticeable stutter on older devices in my testing. Touch controls are functional but less comfortable than a controller — virtual buttons obscure part of the screen, and precise jumps become frustrating during timed sequences. Local co-op is available, but only on tablets with sufficient screen real estate; phones feel cramped.

A genuine limitation: the game saves automatically but only at checkpoints. Quitting mid-level means restarting that section. If you're playing in short bursts, you might lose progress. The humor is also squarely aimed at children — adults may find the jokes repetitive after a few hours of play.
