That’s exactly why I keep Game Controller Tester installed. It’s not a game first – it’s a diagnostic utility that shows you every button press, axis movement, and sensor reading in real time. But it also bundles a tiny twin-stick shooter so you can feel how your controller behaves under actual gameplay stress. If you’ve ever wondered whether your Bluetooth lag is within reason or if that second-hand controller has dead zones, this tool gives you hard data without guesswork.
I’ll be honest: the built‑in shooter isn’t going to replace Hades or Enter the Gungeon. The graphics are basic, with flat coloured shapes and simple enemy patterns. But that’s not the point. What it does well is force you to use both sticks simultaneously while navigating tight corridors and dodging projectiles. I noticed immediately that my left trigger had a slight delay – the game registered the shot half a beat later than my finger. The visual feedback screen confirmed it with a latency spike. For a quick “is my controller working?” check, this mini game beats scrolling through menus. You can also adjust the stick sensitivity on the fly to see if recalibrating helps. It’s crude, but honest. One limitation: there’s no save system or leaderboard. You finish a wave, and you’re back to the main screen. It's purely a stress test, not a time sink.

However, I ran into a real pain point: the app doesn’t show the exact polling rate or input lag in milliseconds. You only get a visual “fast” or “slow” indicator, which is too vague for competitive players. If you really need to measure frames of delay, you’ll need a separate tool. Another drawback: the mouse and keyboard test section feels bare. It registers clicks and keys, but doesn’t highlight ghost inputs or double‑click issues – a missed opportunity for PC users who plug in a controller via OTG.
I tested it with three different Bluetooth controllers: an Xbox Series pad, a Switch Pro controller, and a cheap generic gamepad. The generic one connected but showed erratic axis readings in the sensor test – the gyro data kept jumping. That’s not the app’s fault, but it couldn’t tell me *why*. For diagnosing RF interference or driver conflicts, you’re on your own. Also, the app doesn’t work well with controllers that use custom mapping apps (like the Razer Kishi). It sees the standard input but misses extra buttons. Finally, the CSV export is a nice bonus – you can log a session and analyse it later – but the output includes raw hex codes, not human-readable labels. Unless you know what “ABS_HAT0X” means, the file is mostly noise. So yes, it’s a great first‑pass tester, but it won’t replace a proper oscilloscope or USB monitoring tool.
If you buy and sell used controllers, or if you’re troubleshooting a sudden dead zone in Call of Duty Mobile, Game Controller Tester is a fast, free sanity check. The twin‑stick shooter adds a practical layer – you can actually *feel* issues that a static graph might hide. But if you’re looking for deep telemetry, latency graphs, or support for obscure retro adapters, this app will leave you frustrated. It does one thing (basic input verification) very well, and everything else (advanced diagnostics, long gaming sessions) only passably. For the price of free, I keep it on my phone whenever I need to test a pad before a tournament. Just don’t expect it to fix your hardware – it tells you what’s broken, not how to repair it.
